Revving Up Revolution: FIA Leads Charge Toward Affordable V8 Engines

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem reiterated his support for transitioning to cheaper V8 engines in Formula 1 by the 2029 season. He emphasized the importance of cost reduction and expressed optimism about the teams’ reception to the change. Ben Sulayem highlighted the complex and expensive nature of current power units, citing the need for a shift to simpler and more affordable technology like V8 engines.

The FIA president’s stance aligns with previous discussions on engine affordability held earlier in the season, with an emphasis on maintaining elements of electrification and sustainable fuels in future engine regulations. Any decision on new power units would require consensus among stakeholders including the FIA, FOM, and manufacturers. Ben Sulayem also mentioned the possibility of a 12th team joining the Formula 1 grid, with a focus on ensuring any new entry adds value to the series and follows established procedures.

While Ben Sulayem initially favored V10 engines, the proposal for V8 engines with a more economical hybrid system gained traction for its practicality and relevance. The president underscored the commercial viability and potential weight advantages of a V8 formula. Moving forward, discussions on future power units will continue through proper channels. Ben Sulayem’s overall goal is to facilitate sustainable and cost-effective developments in Formula 1 while considering the series’ long-term viability and competitiveness.
