Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 qualifying session at the Austrian Grand Prix was affected by Pierre Gasly’s spin, hindering his last lap and indicating a decline in Red Bull’s performance due to changing conditions. Despite starting the day close to Lando Norris’ pace, Verstappen was unable to maintain the gap in hotter temperatures and changing wind direction during Q1 and Q2. In Q3, Verstappen was only sixth and his final lap was disrupted by Gasly’s spin, forcing him to back off and ultimately costing him a position on the grid. Verstappen expressed dissatisfaction with the car’s performance in qualifying, attributing it to the challenging conditions and suggesting a more competitive race may be difficult to achieve. Despite his lower starting position, Norris acknowledged Verstappen as a strong contender for victory and emphasized that it was too early to discount him from the championship battle, even with potential upgrades from Red Bull.
