It was surprising to see Carlos Sainz Sr decide not to pursue a late push for the FIA presidency, especially after Mohammed Ben Sulayem received strong support from 36 clubs, mostly from the Americas.
The letter endorsing Ben Sulayem highlighted his leadership qualities, appreciation for his service, commitment, and vision during a challenging time in the FIA, with public criticism and internal restructuring.
Despite initial considerations by Sainz to challenge Ben Sulayem, he ultimately chose not to run, paving the way for Ben Sulayem to potentially extend his term unopposed until 2029.
While Sainz’s decision was met with disappointment by some, it reflected the reality of uncontested elections in sports governance, similar to instances in other organizations like FIFA.
Ben Sulayem’s position as the incoming president for another term could signify a period of continuity and stability within the FIA, despite recent controversies and challenges in the organization.
