Shane van Gisbergen Triumphs with NASCAR Cup Pole Position in Mexico City

Shane van Gisbergen secured pole position early in qualifying with an unbeatable lap time in the No. 88 Chevrolet, marking his second career pole and first of the 2025 season. As he aims to improve his 33rd position in the championship standings, this could be a crucial chance for him to shake up the playoff picture. Ryan Preece from RFK Racing will share the front row with van Gisbergen, finishing just behind in second place, with Ross Chastain in third.

The 45-minute open qualifying session was conducted calmly, allowing teams ample time on the track, despite looming weather concerns. The session witnessed Katherine Legge’s spin but ended with Preece’s noteworthy lap and a spin. Unfortunately, the rain led to a red flag, halting any further qualifying attempts.

Noteworthy drivers included Kyle Larson and home favorite Daniel Suarez in the top ten. Tyler Reddick impressed for 23XI Racing in 22nd place, while Chase Briscoe’s pole streak ended with a 19th place start. Hendrick Motorsports faced challenges with Byron and Bowman starting outside the top 25, and Bell, the recent COTA winner, qualifying in 31st place. Ryan Truex secured 36th place in his first Cup start in over a decade, as Legge rounded out the field from 37th.
