The Future of Racing: Toyota’s Hydrogen-Powered Test Car Makes History at Le Mans 24 Hours

Toyota unveiled the GR LH2 Racing Concept, a hydrogen-powered prototype test car aimed at racing with alternative fuel at Le Mans 24 Hours.

Built at Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe in Cologne around the chassis of the GR010 HYBRID Le Mans Hypercar, the GR LH2 aims to advance knowledge of running an internal combustion engine fueled by liquid hydrogen.

Details of the engine and hybrid system developed at Toyota’s Higashi-Fuji Technical Centre in Japan were not disclosed.

The objective is to test and learn about the combustion engine infrastructure and fuelling system, with a focus on expanding hydrogen combustion engine technology.

While a timeline for track debut is pending, Toyota has been a pioneer in using hydrogen in motorsport, with modified Corollas in the Super Taikyu series in Japan since 2021.

Toyota plans to introduce this technology at Le Mans and in the World Endurance Championship by 2028, pending full regulations becoming available, after confirming safety protocols for liquid hydrogen use in motorsport by the FIA.
