Mercedes Stays Ahead of the Curve: Firm Confidence Amidst 2026 F1 Rules Overhaul

Mercedes’ deputy technical director Simone Resta is confident that Formula 1 teams will not be caught off guard by the 2026 rules overhaul, as concerns raised earlier have been addressed. The new regulations for next year will bring changes to the engine and aerodynamics, including the removal of the MGU-H and increased reliance on electrical power.

Despite initial worries about battery power and potential issues at power-sensitive circuits, teams have been working closely with F1 and the FIA to resolve concerns and innovate within the new rules. Designer Adrian Newey sees opportunities for creativity and different approaches in the regulations, leading teams to prepare for the new era of Formula 1.

Resta emphasized that the FIA has been proactive in closing loopholes in the rules and providing teams with flexibility to excel. While challenges may arise, particularly at tracks like Monza, Resta believes the impact will be manageable with adjustments to the power unit.

With stable rules and room for development within the regulations, teams have been focused on preparing for the 2026 season since January. Resta highlighted the maturity of the regulations and the positive progress made in refining aerodynamic details, allowing teams to delve into development work effectively.
