Red Bull’s Bold Move: Seeking FIA Superlicence Exemption for Rising F1 Talent

While Red Bull Racing’s reserve drivers and junior talents are in the spotlight due to Max Verstappen’s penalty points, the team has requested a superlicence exemption for Formula 2 racer Arvid Lindblad. This request will be discussed during the upcoming FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Macau.

The request for Lindblad, who meets all other superlicence requirements, was submitted before Verstappen reached 11 penalty points. Lindblad has amassed enough license points in junior formulas, but the age requirement prohibits him from formal eligibility until he turns 18.

With the precedent set by Mercedes and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, FIA may grant Lindblad the superlicence early due to his accomplishments and maturity in Formula 2. If approved, Lindblad could participate in F1 practice sessions and possibly substitute for Red Bull drivers if needed.

Red Bull strategically seeks to have Lindblad as a backup option, especially with Verstappen facing a potential one-race ban. The decision on the exemption request will be made in the upcoming FIA meeting in Macau.

If accepted, Lindblad would be eligible for his superlicence during the F1 summer break after turning 18 in August, providing Red Bull with added flexibility in their driver lineup.
