Here’s why George Russell received a drive-through penalty at F1 Monaco GP

The FIA explained the reason behind the harsh penalty given to Mercedes driver George Russell for overtaking Alex Albon off-track at the Monaco Grand Prix. Russell’s frustration with Albon’s slow driving led him to cut the Nouvelle Chicane to pass him, citing erratic driving from the Williams racer. Instead of giving back the position, Russell opted for a 10-second time penalty but was surprised when the stewards decided on a harsher drive-through penalty due to his deliberate off-track overtake shown in his radio message. Race director Rui Marques had warned teams about stricter penalties if rules were exploited in Monaco, where track position is crucial. The stewards explained that Russell’s deliberate infringement merited the drive-through penalty, impacting his and his teammate Antonelli’s positions in the race.
