Why most F1 teams have new suspension and wing designs for Monaco GP

The Monaco Grand Prix circuit’s unique nature calls for Formula 1 teams to bring modified front suspension and brake duct packages, along with high-downforce parts. Teams create bespoke front suspension for Monaco to handle full-steering inputs in tight hairpins, reshaping trackrods and wishbone fairings for wheel clearance. Brake ducts are adjusted to avoid interference with wheel travel and ensure adequate cooling.

Monaco’s low average speeds mean cars experience lower relative air speeds, potentially requiring larger brake ducts for sufficient cooling. Teams maximize downforce by adding large wings due to the circuit’s aerodynamics favoring more downforce without concern for added drag. McLaren is experimenting with rear wing designs for optimal performance.

Aston Martin is adjusting its upper front wing flap for more front-end responsiveness. Some teams choose to use the previous year’s high-downforce wings, remaining circuit-specific updates. The suspension fairings and high-downforce wings may only be seen at select circuits like Hungary and Singapore for better performance.
