On Monday morning, both Josef Newgarden and Will Power were sent to the rear of the field for the Indy 500 due to an illegal modification on their cars, leading to a $100,000 fine and suspension for their race strategists.
Scott McLaughlin’s car, however, was not penalized despite being heavily damaged, as the rear attenuator was found to be in compliance with the rules.
Jacob Abel, the only driver who failed to qualify for the race, will not be granted a spot in the field as IndyCar officials maintain that the 33 fastest cars are already in the race.
Roger Penske, owner of the penalized cars, is in a challenging position given his dual roles in overseeing the affected teams and the IndyCar series.
