For the second consecutive year, Kyle Larson is making a strong effort to complete “The Double” by racing in both the Indy 500 and the Coke 600 on May 25. In the event that bad weather affects the races, Tony Kanaan is prepared to step in as a substitute for the defending 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion. Although Kanaan retired as a driver from the Speedway two years ago, he now manages Arrow McLaren’s IndyCar operations. In readiness to race if needed, Kanaan underwent a veteran refresher test during Day 3 of Indy 500 practice, including 15 laps between 210 and 215 mph, and 15 more laps over 215 mph in Larson’s #17 car. Despite enjoying the experience, Kanaan emphasized his lack of interest in participating in the Indy 500 for the 23rd time, focusing instead on his current role as the team principal for Arrow McLaren. Kanaan’s brief return to the track received positive reception, as he reaffirmed his commitment to leading the team and acknowledged the advancements in IndyCar technology, including the hybrid system which he found no different from regular driving.
