Iron Lynx, the Mercedes World Endurance Championship squad, will showcase a special livery at the upcoming Le Mans 24 Hours to commemorate Mercedes’ triumph in the 1989 race. The three Mercedes GT3s will sport the iconic Silver Arrows scheme used during the manufacturer’s dominant 1-2 finish at Circuit de la Sarthe 36 years ago. This celebratory gesture marks Mercedes’ return to Le Mans after a 26-year hiatus, following Iron Lynx’s switch from Lamborghini to Mercedes in 2025. CEO of Iron Lynx, Andrea Piccini, expressed immense honor in partnering with Mercedes-AMG for this initiative, highlighting the team’s admiration for the Silver Arrows legacy.
Mercedes’ victory in the 1989 Le Mans race with the Sauber-entered C9 was a significant milestone, leading to a triumphant 1-2 finish in the World Sportscar Championship. Christoph Sagemueller, head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, emphasized the historical importance of the return to Le Mans, paying tribute to the iconic Sauber-Mercedes C9 with a special Silver Arrow-inspired design on the LMGT3s. While Mercedes’ Le Mans participation has been sporadic since 1989, the notably problematic 1999 attempt saw the factory squad withdrawing their third entry after a crash by Peter Dumbreck in the #5 car. Despite the challenges, Mercedes’ continued commitment to Le Mans history and legacy is evident in their participation in the upcoming event with Iron Lynx at the helm, adding to the anticipation surrounding the prestigious race set for June 14-15 this year.
