Looking at the 2025 Formula 1 drivers’ standings, it may seem that Mercedes’ George Russell is in contention for the championship due to his consistent performance with podium finishes. However, Russell has not led a race lap this season, coming closest at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Mercedes’ team principal, Toto Wolff, acknowledged the team’s struggle to maintain pace over long runs despite their strong qualifying performances.
Mercedes has been able to reduce the gap to pole position in recent races but still faces challenges with long-run pace, resulting in increasing margins to the race winner in safety-car-less events. Wolff praised McLaren for their superior tire management skills and denied any accusations of rule-bending regarding technical regulations.
He emphasized the importance of learning from competitors and improving performance rather than questioning their methods. Mercedes is dedicated to enhancing their tire management capabilities, considering it a crucial factor that can set them apart from other top teams in the future. Wolff assured that the team is actively working on addressing this issue and adapting for the future.
