For most of Saturday’s Australian MotoGP, Jorge Martin’s soft tyre gamble looked like a smart move that was set to slash Francesco Bagnaia’s title lead.
Jorge Martin had a strong start in the race, leading for 26 laps and building a 3.5-second lead over the field. However, his victory hopes collapsed in the closing stages as Johann Zarco and Francesco Bagnaia overtook him. Martin ended up finishing in fifth place, just 1.008s from victory. The choice of tire became a crucial factor, with Martin opting for the soft rear tire while his rivals chose the medium. Martin acknowledged that the medium tire was the better choice and vowed to make better decisions in the future. With four more rounds remaining, Martin will need to close the 27-point gap to Bagnaia if he wants to challenge for the championship.
