F1 drivers are having to race in a much different way this year with the new cars.
Toto Wolff defended the new F1 cars for 2026, stating that 90 per cent of fans are enjoying the current racing spectacle. The 2026 F1 season saw significant regulatory changes with modifications to power units and aerodynamics. Mercedes started the season strongly with 1-2 finishes in the first two rounds. Some drivers have criticized the new rules, especially regarding energy harvesting and deployment. Max Verstappen is among the drivers who disapprove, calling the new cars “anti-racing.” Despite the criticisms, Wolff emphasizes that the priority is creating entertaining racing that fans enjoy. F1’s new power units have increased electrical output, aligning it with the combustion engine and signaling a necessary evolution for the sport. Wolff encourages respecting both traditionalist and new fan perspectives to determine the best path forward for F1.
