Kirkistown may not be the most historically significant circuit in the world, but it does have a unique history that was relevant to last weekend’s event. It is the only club-owned and operated circuit in the UK, a fact that the 500 Motor Racing Club of Ireland takes pride in. Kirkistown is also believed to be the only current track that used to be a ship, with its origins as a section of an airfield during World War 2 that the Royal Navy later took over. The 500 Club began organizing race meetings at Kirkistown in 1953 and eventually became the owner of the circuit. Last weekend’s event featured a historic theme with pre-1955 sports & racing cars as the headline category, including a variety of aged machines competing in two races. Andy Johnson’s Monza Alfa Romeo and David Wylie’s TT replica Frazer Nash were among the victors in the races, showcasing the diverse array of cars at Kirkistown.
