Formula 1 has released a report into its environmental, social and governance (ESG) activities.
Formula 1 is on track to achieve carbon net-zero status by 2030, as confirmed by its first environmental, social, and governance report. The series had set a goal in 2019 to reduce its carbon footprint and reach net zero by 2030. Throughout the years, F1 has made strides in reducing on-site personnel, transitioning to synthetic fuels, and adopting renewable energy sources where possible. The 2022 season saw a 13% decrease in carbon emissions compared to the 2018 baseline, with a total of 223,031 tonnes emitted. Logistics accounted for 49% of the emissions, influenced by the re-addition of Japan and Australia to the 2022 calendar. CEO Stefano Domenicali emphasized sustainability as a core priority for F1, aiming to ensure the sport’s longevity through eco-friendly practices and innovations. F1’s initiatives extend beyond sustainability, including the establishment of the F1 Academy and the ‘Discover your Drive’ program to promote female participation and talent development in motorsport, with notable success in increasing girls’ involvement in karting competitions.
