Why ‘too senior’ Sanchez left McLaren F1 after three months
Formerly Ferrari’s chief of vehicle concept, David Sanchez was hired by McLaren in March 2023 and later re-joined Ferrari in January after completing gardening leave. Initially set to be one of three technical directors succeeding James Key, Sanchez’s departure was announced just three months into the job. McLaren made changes to its technical structure, leading to Stella taking over Sanchez’s role temporarily until a replacement is found. Neil Houldey and Rob Marshall swapped roles, Marshall now being the chief designer and Houldey the technical director of engineering. Sanchez left McLaren with an amicable agreement, giving him the opportunity to pursue senior roles elsewhere. The reshuffling highlights McLaren’s commitment to a dynamic and adaptable technical organization.
