Last week, the Kyalami circuit in South Africa received FIA approval to upgrade to Grade 1, a vital requirement for hosting a Formula 1 grand prix, signaling a significant step towards F1’s return to the country. The venue now has three years to complete the necessary upgrades, including run-off area adjustments, barrier enhancements, and new kerbs, marking a key milestone. Despite this progress, the momentum for a potential race in South Africa appears to be moving slowly, with uncertainties surrounding the planning process and timeline, raising doubts about the realization of an actual F1 event. Various bids, including Kyalami and Cape Town proposals, were submitted, but the selection of which bids will proceed to the next phase remains pending, adding to the current ambiguity. Furthermore, funding challenges and economic factors pose additional obstacles to securing a South African GP, calling into question the sustainability of such an endeavor given the country’s financial constraints. Thailand, on the other hand, has successfully addressed the funding issue by approving a substantial bid for a new F1 race, demonstrating a different approach and potential success in hosting an event.
