Based on the latest FIA draft of the 2026 power unit regulations, a driver-operated KERS-style system will be featured in the upcoming era of the sport. The regulations are expected to undergo a major overhaul in two years, with six manufacturers committed to the new engine guidelines. Article 5.4.8 of the 2026 draft outlines that drivers will have access to an ‘override mode’ via a button push, boosting top speed to 220.5 mph, drawing inspiration from IndyCar’s ‘push-to-pass’ concept. While specific workings are still undisclosed, the draft sheds light on the framework for this driver-operated system reminiscent of the KERS technology from the 2009-2013 era. Drivers must strategically decide when to activate the KERS-style system as continuous usage may lead to an energy deficit, posing challenges for engineers in tactical planning.
